South Africa’s New Vehicle Market Maintains Strong Growth in August 2026

2026-09-11

South Africa’s new vehicle market continued its positive momentum in August 2026, with total new vehicle sales reaching 57,898 units, an 11.4% increase compared with August 2025. This marked another month of solid growth for the country’s automotive market.

Passenger vehicles remained the largest segment, with 41,216 units sold, up 11.6% year on year. Light commercial vehicle sales also performed strongly, reaching 13,727 units, an increase of 11.0%. Medium and heavy commercial vehicles recorded double-digit growth as well.

Toyota continued to lead the market, while Suzuki and Volkswagen ranked second and third. Chinese brands also maintained a strong presence, with Chery, GWM and Jetour all ranking among the leading manufacturers in August.

Another important trend is the continued growth of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs). In the first seven months of 2026, South Africa recorded 16,289 NEV sales, an increase of 88% compared with the same period in 2025. Hybrids, plug-in hybrids and battery-electric vehicles are all contributing to the country’s gradual transition toward more electrified mobility.

Overall, August’s results point to a resilient South African automotive market, supported by improving vehicle affordability, relatively stable financing conditions and growing consumer interest in fuel-efficient and electrified vehicles. At the same time, the rise of Chinese brands and NEVs is contributing to a more diverse and competitive market.

With domestic demand continuing to strengthen, South Africa’s automotive sector is likely to remain an important part of the country’s broader industrial and economic development.
